Prestigious journalism awards continue to support media freedom

06 August 2019 - Entries for the 2019 Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards (VJOYs) have opened and will close on 31 August 2019. The theme this year is “Connect the Dots”, which pays tribute to the outstanding journalism that continues to support South Africa’s democratic institutions.

Takalani Netshitenzhe, Chief Officer for Corporate Affairs at the Vodacom Group says, “We look forward to the wide-ranging and excellent standard of entries which we have come to expect through the competition. The pace of news over the last year has been rapid and shape-shifting in the South African context and we are confident that this year’s entries will not disappoint. Vodacom is proud to play a role in supporting press freedom in South Africa through the continued sponsorship of these prestigious awards.”

The 2019 awards will see three new judges joining the competition’s panel. Seasoned media veterans Mapi Mhlangu, Jermaine Craig and Franz Kruger (see biographies on the website) will replace Elna Rossouw, Megan Rusi and Mathatha Tsedu. They join an experienced adjudication panel which includes Ryland Fisher, Mary Papayya, Arthur Goldstuck, Patricia McCracken, Collin Nxumalo, Albe Grobbelaar and Obed Zilwa.

Ryland Fisher, convener of the VJOY judging panel says: “We are grateful to Megan, Mathatha and Elna for their immeasurable contribution to the awards. They have left due to professional and personal commitments. We welcome Jermaine, Mapi and Franz who will bring fresh ideas and new perspectives to the awards and the judging process.”

Awards are given to the best journalist in a range of categories in five regions nationally, with the process culminating in a national awards ceremony in Johannesburg. Winning a Vodacom Award is a prestigious career achievement, with the overall national winner set to receive a prize of R100 000. The categories for 2019 are: Live reporting/ breaking news; Investigative; Opinion; Lifestyle; Photography; Sport; Economics; Politics; CSI; Data Journalism; Multi-platform, the Young Journalist of the Year and the Lifetime Achiever Award. Journalists will be able to enter their best achievements for work produced between 1 August 2018 and 31 July 2019. All entries will be online, and hand delivered entries will no longer be accepted. Entries can be submitted online at journalist.vodacom.co.za. Entries close at midnight on 31 August and no late entries will be considered.

There is R5000 up for grabs for each of the regional category winners while national category winners will take home R10 000. The overall Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award winner will receive R100 000. In the event of joint winners, the prize money will be shared.

The winner of the young journalist award, one of the competition’s most prestigious accolades, will win an all-expenses paid overseas trip to work in an international newsroom, including a visit to the renowned Thomson Foundation.
